Immuno-oncology (I-O)
Immuno-oncology (I-O) is a field of medicine that focuses on harnessing the power of the immune system to fight cancer. It involves using immunotherapies, which are treatments that stimulate or enhance the immune system’s natural ability to recognize and attack cancer cells.
Immuno-oncology therapies work by:
- Enhancing immune cell function: Boosting the activity of immune cells, such as T cells and natural killer cells, to recognize and attack cancer cells.
- Overcoming immune suppression: Inhibiting mechanisms that cancer cells use to evade or suppress the immune system.
- Targeting specific cancer cells: Using antibodies or other molecules to specifically target and destroy cancer cells.
Examples of immuno-oncology therapies include:
- Checkpoint inhibitors: Drugs that release the brakes on the immune system, allowing it to attack cancer cells more effectively.
- Cancer vaccines: Treatments that stimulate the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells.
- CAR-T cell therapy: A personalized treatment that involves genetically modifying a patient’s own immune cells to recognize and attack cancer cells.
- Monoclonal antibodies: Targeted therapies that recognize and bind to specific proteins on cancer cells, marking them for destruction.
Immuno-oncology has shown significant promise in treating various types of cancer, including melanoma, lung cancer, kidney cancer, and others. It’s a rapidly evolving field, with ongoing research and development of new therapies.
